Since 1974 some 4,000 Vietnamese students have studied in Australia at tertiary institutions on Australian Government scholarships. In 2012 up to 250 Australian Development Awards consisting of Australian Development Scholarships (ADS)/Australian Leadership Award Scholarships (ALAS) are available to Vietnamese for post-graduate studies in Australia starting in 2013 under the Australia Awards scheme. For more information on the Australia Awards see http://www.australiaawards.gov.au. Both ADS and ALAS awards target priority human resource and development needs of Vietnam. In Vietnam the ALAS is a supplementary award to the ADS and ALAS are awarded to those who have also shown outstanding leadership qualities. ALAS recipients receive special leadership training in Australia (see. www.ldp.net.au for further details) On-line applications for the ADS/ALAS 2012 Round open on 1 February 2012 and close on 30 April 2012. Men and women, especially ethnic minorities, from provincial and rural areas who meet eligibility and selection criteria are strongly encouraged to apply. Disadvantaged applicants (i.e. those from designated poor districts and provinces and persons with disabilities) are given priority. Lecturers from provincial universities and colleges are also given special consideration. The ADS/ALAS awards are administered on behalf of the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) by the Australian Scholarships for Development in Vietnam (ASDiV) Office. The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) is the partner organization representing the Government of Vietnam in the Australian Development Awards program. Program Management
